Visco-supplement and HA Injections For Orthopaedic Pain in Canada
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a natural component (or molecule) of the fluid that helps lubricate and cushion your joints. Patients with osteoarthritis experience a decrease or “thinning” of hyaluronic acid in the joints. An injection of hyaluronic acid, also known as a viscous-supplement injection, can help replenish the body’s natural supply of this important molecule.

HA injections can be an effective pain-relieving treatment option, particularly for patients with mild to moderate arthritis. There is good scientific evidence to support the use of Hyaluronic Acid (HA)/Visco-supplement injections, especially for mild to moderate knee arthritis.

Compared to corticosteroid injections, Hyaluronic Acid (HA)/Visco-supplement injections may provide more lasting pain relief, often up to one year, and can usually be safely repeated every six months if needed. One downside is the cost - usually ~$500/injection. However, if you have supplemental private health insurance, the cost is often covered under most insurance plans.

Our Ortho South surgeons are happy to discuss with you during your consultation if Hyaluronic Acid (HA)/Visco-supplement injections might be an appropriate treatment option for your orthopaedic condition.
