Dr. Mackey is currently working in an administrative role at Ortho South, and does not see patients in private practice. Dr. Mackey does offer surgical care in the public healthcare system however, via her Calgary Alberta practice. Referrals for Dr. Mackey can be made through the public system via the usual channels, or through the Access Orthopaedics Clinic.
Bio
Dr. Denise A. Mackey is an FRCSC certified orthopaedic surgeon with sub-specialty interest in shoulder-related conditions, as well as over 12 years of independent practice experience managing most general orthopaedic problems.
Dr. Mackey graduated from medical school at the University of Ottawa in 2006. From 2006-2011, Dr. Mackey completed her orthopaedic residency training at the University of British Columbia. From 2011-2012 she undertook further subspecialty fellowship training in orthopaedic shoulder and elbow surgery at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Australia. There, she worked under world renowned orthopaedic surgeons Prof. David Sonnabend, Dr. Allan Young , and Dr. Benjamin Cass.
After completing her fellowship in Australia, Dr. Mackey began independent practice in Prince George, BC in 2012. From 2012-2021, Dr. Mackey worked in Prince George at the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia, practicing general orthopaedics.
From 2022-2023, Dr. Mackey worked as a locum orthopaedic surgeon at South Health Campus in Calgary, with a focus on shoulder reconstruction and general orthopaedic trauma.
Dr. Mackey is now working full time as an orthopaedic shoulder surgeon at South Health Campus in Calgary, and also sees patients out of the Access Orthopaedics Clinic in Calgary.
Outside of orthopaedics, Dr. Mackey enjoys spending time with her two young boys and her husband (Dr. Costa). She loves being active and escaping to the great outdoors whenever possible to participate in recreational activities such as hiking, camping, surfing, and snowboarding.
