Braces and Splints for Chronic Orthopaedic Treatment in Canada
Splints or other special types of braces may be beneficial non-operative options to improve function, impart “stability” to a joint, facilitate healing, and/or relieve pain for various acute and chronic orthopaedic conditions.

After an orthopaedic injury, stabilization of joints and soft tissues may be required to allow these structures to heal.
Removable splints/braces and walker boots may be good alternatives to other types of basic plaster or fibreglass splints that cannot be easily taken off for hygiene purposes or physiotherapy. Likewise, basic splints and casts are not easy to reapply on your own without assistance.

For some chronic conditions, specific types of braces may be helpful to “offload” a joint, to help reduce associated pain. Similarly, braces may be useful to provide joint “stability” in some chronic conditions such as ACL deficiency or other ligamentous injuries.
